In the frame of the Czech Presidency of the EU, the exhibition “Design and Transformation. Stories of Czech Design 1990-2020” presents the Czech Republic as a place where innovations that are beneficial in an international context are born and where locally specific traditions are also preserved and valued. The exhibition explores the selected projects of thirteen successful companies that reflect the upheavals of Czech history and have a long legacy of products known far beyond the borders of the Czech Republic such as the international car manufacturer Škoda and furniture producer TON, as well as other young companies. Furthermore, the show will also pay homage to more traditional Czech domains, for example glassmaking. To accompany the exhibition, a presentation of the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design will be included, which features a video projection on the facade of the Prague House in Brussels.Main Organizer: UMPRUM Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague together with Moravian Gallery in Brno and the Design Museum Brussels.

Troubled Waters
In most creation myths worldwide, water is the element that brings new life. A substance from which a divine power separates the earth, life and everything that is. Troubled waters have become a compelling metaphor for flight of thought, an apt material approximation for the intangible. We gaze into the cosmic depths and look for other planets where troubled waters may have brewed another rich organic cocktail from the heaving masses of the global ocean – just like the one that nourished prehistoric life on earth – and brought forth other life forms that – who can tell – may even now be dancing in its waves.
Troubled waters make clay supple and receptive to creator’s touch. They coax the rigid mass to yield to change and new creation. The archetypical perspective on ceramics is tied to reigning in the troubled waters – arresting their flow in a body of clay. The relationship of water and ceramics is as old as the human ability to work with the material. Our stories of ancient civilisations are rooted in archaeological finds, where most artefacts are ceramic objects – little time capsules that have captured history itself and tell of past aquatic presence through their marks.
We, humans, see ourselves as omnipotent creators, wielding all but absolute power to bend the world to our will. Yet we forget some things are still beyond our control. The storms that shake the world today are also rippling in the arts. Their impact can take many shapes and forms, from a polished blade to a shining pearl matured in hiding from the winds.

"A Vase is the expression of your state of mind, to create your Living lifestyle around flowers arrangements, or as a stand alone piece of Art in your Home décor. From minimalism to craftsmanship creativity, a Vase can support all spectrum of materials and express your inner self according to your rooms. Glass, Brass, Ceramics, Wood, Copper, Leather, Porcelain, Stainless Steel, etc... can be all suitable for a Vase to express your style, and joie de vivre. Together with an infinite combinations of shapes, and sizes, a Vase will be your best friend to start with your Home Sweet Home lifestyle decoration. There is no limit of how many Vases can be in one's House as it transcends the functional usage of its own purpose, and becomes your best object of desire."

“A vase is a vessel that existed since Antiquities. The style, size and decoration demonstrated the level of a civilisation & its level of affluence. It also told their stories through surface illustrations and decoration.
In the modern world we all own a few vases and constantly collect more, it is part of our unconscious desire to collect and display. A vase is always on display whether it is full or empty and for this reason a vase is a very personal choice and taste.
A vase tells the personality of the owner.
To me a vase is symbol of life and positive vibes, simply because it is mostly used for flowers which represent nature, colour and beauty. However when a vase is not in use it should be equally appreciated for its shape and design.
The life of the vase is more determined the owner than the maker!”
Lina Kanafani, curator, gallerist, MINT shop, London (GB) __________________________________________________________
“Vases are very archaic containers of something we want to represent. Found in many archeological sites as well as in shipwrecks all over the world. It became also a message send from one side of the planet to the other. When Marco Polo brought a 10 centimeter white vase with floral motifs to Venice from China it was explaining a lot more of his adventure than words. Still part of the treasures of San Marco Cathedral it started the fashion of porcelain on the old continent. Federico I de' Medici started to manufacture and Dutch as Portuguese merchants imported from Asia these objects of desire. Vases can be conceived in many different materials. Each piece has his own soul. Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi princess of Lucca and Piombino, sister of Napoleon made one of the biggest disasters to Etruscan vases, by destroying thousands of those considered of lower value. All of us understand things in a different way, but the most important one is the relation one has with his own vase collection. From primitive vases to the ones of Ettore Sottsass and others, very special visions where created and we trace infinitive possibilities of expressions. I think of my vases also as an urne where to keep my ashes before thrown in the wind. In a very specific way there is something holy in collecting them and to consider them as one of your most attractive expression of life. I know people that own thousand of different vases of pressed glass, others that are just after Chinese Ming pieces, but everyone has his own interpretation. This is the beauty of a useful item with a very strong poetry.”

Fulfilled potential of empty vases • He specializes in shaping deformations and destructions. • He uses porcelain layering and sprayed ceramic. • He also makes series of interior porcelain accessories.
Roman Šedina's vases smoothly cope with emptiness. Even without flowers, they live to the fullest, seeming to bear their nakedness proudly. As if the material was both a tool and a product. "When I first encountered clay, I was fascinated. The first touch, the initial trials and setbacks led me to strong admiration. It all sparked an intense desire to comprehend this matter." Šedina's processing of argil appears atemporal. Touching the objects, one can't tell the era of their genesis: Simple shapes coated with a grainy, in places glazed texture, caked knots of clay and tangible imperfections. These could come from neolith, antiquity, present or even future. Robed in distinctive colours, the vases exhibit their earthy origin with both modesty and pride.
When did you first come across ceramic?
When I was 15 years old, I witnessed the production of a teapot and vase for the first time. To me, it was unbelievable that you can make vessels of a clod of clay in just a few minutes. Several hand movements, finger pushing once or twice and a wonderful, organic shape is born.
So you immediately knew you'd do it?
It was a gradual process. And fate, I think. Bechyně, the town of my birth, is considered the centre of ceramic in Czechia. The local ceramic high school has a hundred-year tradition. Also, my family pushed me forward, as well as my first successes.
Now it's you who teaches on Bechyně high school, right?
Yes, it came full circle. I motivate young apprentices to do this beautiful craft, the oldest one in the world. In 2016 I also started the Live Life initiative to support and promote the ceramic. Touching clay is calming; it's considered an art therapy.
But what if one's not patient enough?
You must be tenacious. It takes a lot of time and concentration to create a single piece. But it's worth it. I make my dreams come true, putting my emotions, ideas and perception of natural beauty into the objects. In my case, it's a certain obsession.

Czech Republic is internationally well-known for its famous Bohemian crystal and centuries old glass tradition, that belongs to one of the oldest in Europe. But there is much more to Czech design! Presenting a selection of some of the best Czech companies and designers, Shapes and Shapers: Contemporary Czech Design is the largest exhibition of Czech design in Turkey to date. Organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ankara and the Czech Centres, the exhibition is hosted by Ankara´s leading contemporary arts gallery Cermodern from September 27 – October 30, 2019.
100 YEARS OF CZECH DESIGN
Shapes and Shapers is divided into three main parts. The Story of Czech Design introduces the development of design in the Czech Republic between 1918-2018 and features some of the most iconic objects created in the past century. From Libuše Niklová´s inflatable toys, through cubist ceramics and furniture to city bikes, all the objects are timeless in their quality and also because of the fact they are either still being manufactured.
CZECH DESIGN BRANDS
The second section, presented in Cermodern´s North Gallery, is a showcase of internationally successful Czech design brands. Drawing inspiration from the tradition of Czech glassmaking, the selection focuses on lighting products and glassware and includes some spectacular chandeliers by the internationally celebrated company Lasvit, who will also present part of their Monster Cabaret collection.
Also featured are urban cool designs by Bomma, and of course the ageless hand-blown vases by Moser. As a special treat, Turkish design brand Paşabahçe will present their collection developed by Czech glass artist Rony Plesl.
NEW TALENTS
The third and last section aims to blur the usual boundaries between design and fine-arts and takes us into the word of free creativity and emerging designers, presenting work that has never been exhibited in Turkey before. Selected objects contain textiles (with Tereza Rosalie Kladošová´s stunning fabrics from recycled Merino wool being one of the exhibition´s highlights), jewellery (including the award-winning eye-wear collection by Nastassia Aleinikava and work by students of Prague´s Academy of Art, Architecture and Design), and of course glass and ceramics (glowing uranium glass vases by Rony Plesl, elegant minimalist Bandaska collection by Dechem Studio, or original porcelain tableware illustrated by Michal Bačák). The richness of approaches, talent and a certain whimsical quality the upcoming design generation transform Cermodern´s South Gallery into a breath-taking playground of forms and materials.

A collection of pigmented wall RGB plates. Records, large dimensions, elegant form, abstract content and relationship to space can be both spiritual and highly sensual.
The RGB (red, green, blue) can be understood as determining primary color scale. The RGB principle is additive mixing of colors, and it directly departs from the way how colors are perceived by human eye. But this is not the only correct reading. Color in my collection of easel pigmented plates is not seen identically by all who look at them, and it is not only color that matters - but also the surface and the way it is lit, as well as other conditions of sensual perception.
“These pigmented, large-sized wall plates are record and outcome of a three-year-long reserch project into developing an original technique. It involves spraying ceramic materials with pigmented ceramic matter to create a surface finish. The approach combines traditional craftmanship with contemporary design, a complicated process involving repeated kiln-firing and experimenting with various templates. The plates are a throwback to the earliest caves where human beings first learned to express themselves, recording their existence fo future generations. The shapes are womblike, symbolising life and sexuality. The plates are inspired by the first cave paintings and a discrete red ”disc” made up of dots aplied one next to the other.”

The exhibition presented at Budapest Design Week takes its name from a famous Polish tongue-twister Korale koloru koralowego…, which translates into English as coral-coloured corals. Agnieszka Jacobson-Cielecka, the curator of the exhibition, looks at the question of whether a country or region’s colour palette can be established. What are the colours of the Czech Republic? Poland? Slovakia? How about Hungary?
The exhibition analyses colours used by Czech, Polish, Slovak and Hungarian designers and their designs – vases, cups, fabrics – to try to discern if there are certain colour patterns that emerge – pinks and blues, greens and yellows.
Designers taking part in the exhbition include Dechem Studio, Klara Sumova, Milan Pekar, Roman Sedina and Geometr from the Czech Republic, Maria Jeglińska and Monika Patuszyńska from Poland, Linda Vikova, Simona Janisova and Michaela Bednarova from Slovakia, and Eszter Soptei, Edina Andrasi, Judit Lantos and Sara Kele from Hungary.
These projects are organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute operating under the Culture.pl brand as part of POLSKA 100, the international cultural programme accompanying the centenary of Poland regaining independence.
Financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland as part of the multi-annual programme NIEPODLEGŁA 2017-2021.

Designblok Prague: Anothere White Story
Every year Designblok supports innovative designers from all over Europe. We have prepared a small sample of what Designblok has to offer for this year’s London Design Festival. The story of contemporary Czech porcelain is told through five renowned Czech designers, who have become so enthralled with this white material that it has become their main medium of expression. Five varying approaches to porcelain as a material, decorative work and the use of technology. How far can we go with this traditional production material? The interplay between glazes, shards, technical porcelain, painting and salt spraying on classically spun forms. Tradition v. innovation.

Roman Šedina / Ceramic technology is a challenging task; you won’t create anything the first time round. You only learn what it’s about and start to understand it over time. Both of the techniques that I use – spinning and spraying – partially originate in routine small-scale production. Spinning is all about the incompleteness. The form comes to life in a way that is amazing. Sprayed porcelain makes the surface of the vessel more dramatic. Decorations produced using porcelain spraying is supplemented with salt sprays, which together create harmony and shift everyday utility items into the role of an object. Design consists of open forms as an open embrace, or a symbol of willingness to help, hospitality and openness.

The exhibition project Sketches eliminates unnecessary and misleading. It represents a collection of vases KA directly from the process of realization in wide spectrum of porcelain and ceramic spraying possibilities. The installation is complemented with the large posters by Eva Havelková. Her realizations provide the audience back to the sketches – the initial idea. The part of the project is the lecture and workshop with the theme: How to perceive beautiful things.

After the first decade of the twenty-first century, the generation of young designers and firms – including the studio of Qubus, Daniel Pirsc, and Jiri Pelcl – systematically tacked the design and production of porcelain. Although – as in glass design – several of the major porcelain factories have recently been shut down, the tradition of porcelain manufacture is non being continued in existing or newly opened alternative workshops. Tyformy, Hidden Factory, Ondrej Batousek, and ROMAN SEDINA belong to a new design generation specializing almost exclusively in the material. Their works are complemented in the exhibition with projects by other designers who also engaged in interior design, illustration, glass production, and more. / www.viennadesignweek.at
